Current state of research and teaching activities

Studies on the systematics, ecology, life-cycle and genetics in spider mites
Intracellular manipulators of reproduction in spider mites
Molecular phylogeny in spider mites
 My own research is primarily concerned with the mechanisms of speciation in spider mites (Acari) and herbivorus insects. I am specifically interested in the evolutionary processes leading to the utilization of different host plants by closely related mite species. To address this topic, biochemical markers (intra- and inter-specific variation in allozymes and DNA) are coupled with other factors (concerning morphology, genetics, hybridization capabilities, ecology, life history and resistance mechanisms to miticides). By adopting a multidisciplinary approach, a better understanding of the factors influencing rates of evolution is also expected to be achieved. DNA sequence data are of paramount importance for analyzing phylogenetic relationships among species, the exact identification of closely related (therefore morphologically similar) species, and for picking up the genes associated with miticide resistance.
